Twitter – the unexpected place to be for museums and museum professionals.
It’s become such an important platform for facilitating museum communication that the American Alliance of Museums created the role of ‘Social Media Journalist’ at their annual conference to help keep conversation flowing, give unique perspectives, and curate content for those following along at home.
Twitter is helping museums and their workers all over the world come together to create a global online community.
According to one study by La Megnetica, the ‘small world principles’ applies around the world, particularly in Europe, US and Canada. This makes Twitter an incredibly useful tool for museums wanting to engage with other museums worldwide.
The study followed museum communication world wide to map the platform’s museum communities. The findings? Almost works of art themselves! Check out the worldwide communication over one year:
While tweeting can often feel like shouting into the void, museum workers have come together to facilitate organized chats to discuss issues, broad topics, and network.
How do Twitter chats work? Each one is unique, but you can generally follow these rules:
- Head over to Twitter at the designated chat time.
- Enter the chat’s designated hashtag into the search bar, and select ‘Latest’ to follow the chat in real time.
- Typically a facilitator will pose questions with a Q1, Q2, etc. format.
- Answer questions with A1, A2, etc. accordingly or reply to others. Remember to always add the chat’s hashtag to your tweets!
EMPs (Emerging Museum Professionals) Twitter and Twitter chats are a great way to network if you can’t always get to a conference.
